hortus deliciarum, a picture garden of alsace in the springtime

The first encyclopaedia written by a woman, the Hortus Deliciarum or Garden of Delights was the work of Abbess Herrad of Landsberg and bears superb illustrated witness to daily life in Alsace during mediaeval times.

It was destroyed during a fire at the Strasbourg Library in 1870. Fortunately, a facsimile had been made. This exhibition includes a reconstitution of a scriptorium (lectern, cathedra, etc.) as well as reproductions of richly illuminated pages made using ink and pigments on parchment, with comments.
